Cemetery Projects

OUR COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Kandanga Cemetery is cared for and continually enhanced through the dedication of the Kandanga Cemetery Association, volunteers and the wider community.

Over the years, many projects have been undertaken to improve facilities, preserve heritage, enhance the beauty of the grounds and create meaningful spaces for remembrance and reflection.

Funds to achieve these projects have been gained from many, many grant applications, valued volunteer work and much appreciated donations.

Some of our completed projects include:

Memorial & Remembrance Projects

  • Remembrance Pillars — creating a dedicated place for reflection and commemoration
  • RSL Memorial Book — preserving the stories and service of those who have served
  • RSL Memorial Gardens — a special area honouring our veterans
  • Bunya Chapel — a peaceful space for services, reflection and remembrance

Grounds, Landscaping & Infrastructure Improvements

  • Comprehensive landscaping plans to guide the ongoing enhancement of cemetery grounds
  • Queen’s Jubilee Gardens project
  • Road entry enhancements, including flood resilience improvements
  • Cemetery concrete driveway improvements
  • New flagpole installation
  • Granite lectern design and construction
  • New beams installed throughout various cemetery sections
  • Retaining wall and concrete pad construction

These projects reflect our ongoing commitment to maintaining Kandanga Cemetery as a place of dignity, beauty and connection for current and future generations.

Our Gardens

Over many years, the Kandanga Cemetery Association has worked with landscape designers to develop a long-term vision for gardens throughout the cemetery. Through grant funding and community support, this vision has gradually been transformed into the attractive gardens and landscaped areas enjoyed today.

A significant milestone was the creation of the Queen’s Jubilee “Honour and Reflection” Gardens, officially opened on 26 March 2023 as part of the Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program. Stage One of the gardens was funded through a $15,000 Gaming Community Benefit Fund grant, with a subsequent Queen’s Jubilee Grant funding Stage Two.

The project enabled the planting of avenues of trees and feature plantings selected to provide beauty, shade and longevity while complementing the cemetery environment. The gardens also serve as a lasting tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and her remarkable 70-year reign.

Armed Services Memorial

Past & Present

Located beside the Bunya Chapel, the RSL Memorial provides a place of honour, reflection and remembrance for the men and women of our district who have served Australia in war, peacekeeping and defence service.

The memorial features a granite Memorial Book and memorial columns set within landscaped gardens overlooking the cemetery grounds. Designed as a peaceful place for contemplation and commemorative gatherings, the memorial recognises the contribution and sacrifice of local service personnel across generations.

The Memorial Book was officially opened as part of the Bunya Chapel opening celebrations on 19 February 2026. Together, the chapel, gardens and memorial create a lasting tribute where families, visitors and future generations can reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation.

The Kandanga Cemetery Association acknowledges the support of the Mary Valley RSL Sub Branch in the development of the memorial.
