Bunya Chapel

Bunya Chapel

Past & Present

The Bunya Chapel stands within the Kandanga Cemetery grounds as a testament to the vision, generosity and commitment of the local community. The chapel was constructed through the efforts of the community organisation, supported by grant funding and generous donations from local residents and businesses.

The chapel was officially opened by Lou Evans and his wife Nancy, who joined the community to celebrate this important milestone. During the opening ceremony, it was noted that a church had originally been erected on the site in 1905, near the cemetery entrance. Lou Evan’s special connection to this early church as having been christened there on 26 September 1937.

The chapel was named Bunya Chapel in recognition of the area’s earliest history. Before Kandanga existed, the original settlement was known as Bunya Creek. Following the devastating floods of 1893 and 1898, the township was relocated to higher ground where Kandanga now stands.

Today, Bunya Chapel provides a peaceful setting for funeral services, memorial ceremonies and the commemoration of those laid to rest within the cemetery grounds.

As both a functional facility and a symbol of community spirit, Bunya Chapel preserves an important link to the history of Bunya Creek, Kandanga and the generations of local families who have shaped the district

RETURNED Services Memorial

Located beside the Bunya Chapel, the RSL Memorial provides a place of honour, reflection and remembrance for the men and women of our district who have served Australia in war, peacekeeping and defence service.

The memorial features a granite Memorial Book and memorial columns set within landscaped gardens overlooking the cemetery grounds. Designed as a peaceful place for contemplation and commemorative gatherings, the memorial recognises the contribution and sacrifice of local service personnel across generations.

The Memorial Book was officially opened as part of the Bunya Chapel opening celebrations on 19 February 2026. Together, the chapel, gardens and memorial create a lasting tribute where families, visitors and future generations can reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation.

The Kandanga Cemetery Association acknowledges the support of the Mary Valley RSL Sub Branch in the development of the memorial.
